Most people have tried some form of Pilates I’ve always thought it’s important to learn where the method originated from & to understand some of the background knowledge as many people think Pilates is just a high intensity reformer session, however originally it was quite a different workout … Pilates was originally named ‘contrology’ & created by a man called Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. His system was focused around six guiding principles: concentration, control, centering, precision , flow & breath. His original exercise method would be taught on a variety of Pilates equipment such as the Cadillac, Wunda chair, ladder barrel, reformer, high chair, baby chair, pedi pole & mat. The flow, sequence & repetitions would always be the same but at the end of the workout there would be a few extra exercises added that would be specific to the individual students needs. Most sessions were taught as privates. The Pilates method became very popular in the 1960s with dancers In NY to help with injury prevention & rehabilitation. Over the years his classical method slowly started to become more commercialised - particularly when it became popular in Beverly Hills in the 1970s. Now there are so many different interpretations & hybrid style methods introduced over the years. Such as a rise large group training on the reformers & Mat it health clubs/ gyms. There are some classic, authentic studios around that still follow the exact sequence taught by JP. Whatever you consider to be ‘Pilates’ there is so much to learn from the original work & so much innovative, science based knowledge in the contemporary teaching. I personally found a mix of both to be amazing for seeing incredible transformations both physically & mentally with myself & clients. Such an amazing, timeless exercise method!
